Q1. Define Parthenogenesis. Give two examples.
  • Development of female gamete (ovum) into a complete organism without fertilization is known as parthenogenesis. Examples: Rotifers, Drones of honeybee.
Q2. What are gemmules? Name the organism which produce gemmules. Make a labelled diagram of gemmule.
  • Gemmules are internal buds formed inside the parent's body. Example: Fresh water sponges (Spongilla).
Q3. In certain simple plants, uwhy are male gametes produced in large numbers as compared to the female gametes? Is it applicable in animals also? Yes or not.
  • In those plants, water is the medium through which gamete transfer takes place. A large number of the male gametes, however, fail to reach the female gametes. To compensate this loss of male gametes during transport, they are produced in large numbers. Yes it is also applicable in animals.
Q4. Write the modes of asexual reproduction in the following
organisms, Sycon, Penicillium, Spongilla, Paramecium, Yeast,Marchantia, Amoeba Chlamydomonas.
  • Organism                           Modes of Reproduction
  • Sycon                                        External budding
  • Penicillium                              Conidia
  • Spongilla                                  Internal budding (Gemmule)
  • Paramecium                            Binary fission (transverse)
  • Yeast                                          Budding (External)
  • Marchantia                              Gemmae
  • Amoeba                                    Binary fission (Simple)
  • Chlamydomonas                     Zoospores
Q5. What are the three major phases in the life cycle of an organism ? Define each phase  or  Discuss the similarities in pattern of sexual reproduction .
  • Juvenile phase , Reproductive phase , Senescent phase Juvenile phase : The phase of growth in the organisms before reproductive maturity .
  • Reproductive phase : In this phase organism attains reproductive maturity .
  • Senescent phase : The phase between reproductive maturity and death .
Q6 . Differentiate the following organisms on the basis of isogamy and heterogamy Monocystis , Plasmodium , Human beings , Cladophora
  • Monocystis , Cladophora - Isogamous
  • Plasmodium , Human beings - Heterogamous
Q7 . ( a ) State the difference between meiocyte and gamete with respect to chromosome number . ( b ) Why is a whiptail lizard referred to as parthenogenetic .
  • ( a ) In meiocyte , chromosome number is diploid ( 2n ) while in gamete , haploid ( n ) .
  • ( b ) Because the egg develops into a complete offspring without fertilization .
Q8 . Name any two organisms and the phenomenon involved where the female gamete undergoes development to form new organisms without fertilization .
  • Honeybee and turkey
  • Parthenogenesis
